What is a childminder?

Childminders are childcare professionals working in their own homes looking after other people's children. They are self-employed and can set their own fees. All childminders caring for children under the age of 8 have to be registered with Ofsted and are regularly inspected. Their homes have to be safe and child-friendly.

All registered childminders have to have introductory training in childcare and many go on to take further qualifications in children's care and education. All childminders must also hold a current certificate in paediatric first aid.

Registered childminders must be police checked or hold an enhanced disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau, checking that they are suitable to work with children. All people over 16 living with them also have to be CRB checked. Childminders also have to have up to date public liability insurance.

Childminders are encouraged to become quality assured. In this county, we have 8 networks of quality assured childminders. These childminders offer high quality childcare over and above the legal requirements expected by Ofsted and can become accredited to provide the free hours that all 3 and 4 year olds and some 2 year olds are entitled to receive.
